LOVED Giambattista Valli's DEBUT collection as a Couturier this week.
The structured, architectural pieces balanced the soft, flowy, feminine pieces well and I was so pleased that he remained true to his style. I was especially fond of the black and white pieces that started the show and also loved the bright, bold pinks and purples that he used in his full length evening gowns to close out the show.
Bravo Maestro.... Well done.

TIMEOUT for something a bit more serious today. While I use this blog to divulge in one of the loves of my life: fashion..... I am ALSO very passionate about issues of social justice and contributing (in any way that I can) to stories of redemption and LIFE. So, I've signed myself up for a HALF MARATHON! Race day is on March 24th and the beneficiary charity is WORLD VISION; and specifically their efforts in providing CLEAN WATER to communities in AFRICA.

The practical implications of having ONE deep water well in a community means 2,800 gallons of clean, fresh water every day. Children usually charged with the responsibility of walking long distances to fetch water for their families and community can now be healthier and use that time in the classroom.

One billion people do not have access to clean water.. ONE BILLION.

With the efforts of organizations like: World Vision, Charity Water, Water, CLEAN WATER, among countless others... we are closing the gap on that number and working towards a healthier world!

Christopher Bailey has done it again! Bailey, during his tenure as Chief Creative Officer at Burberry, holds numerous groundbreaking initiatives in social media under his belt. Amongst global luxury brands, Burberry has become a forerunner in connecting to their client base by optimizing the digital platform. But, without further ado, I give you some of my favorite picks from this collection.

So, finally got a chance to see Girl with the Dragon Tattoo this past weekend while out celebrating our anniversary...and i'm not gonna lie... that movie was INTENSE... i had to look away SEVERAL times and sincerely felt frightened at one point; and not the kind of scared you get when watching SCREAM. It was a gut wrenching, squirm in your seat kinda scared. All that said, I'm kinda in love with Rooney Mara now. She did an insanely good job in her role and was completely convincing. She recently graced the covers of the November 2011 issue of US VOGUE, and the photos (shot by Mert + Marcus) were stunning.

while i spend my days working as an interactive designer... glued to my computer for 8+ hours a day... i have always loved working with my hands... being able to make something tangible, with real textures, depth and color. In the coming days/weeks... i'll post some projects that have been keeping me busy lately. With the onset of christmas and the purchase of our first christmas tree!!! i just got really excited and have been jolted back into one of creative, diy phases and i am LOVING it.

So impressed by her creativity in construction and the use of texture and volume. Critics are already calling her the "new McQueen," which in my opinion is a bit of a stretch... but there is no doubt about her talent and creativity. Think she is going to be a big hit. Cecil Beaton: Style King in New York

Hoping to see this exhibit on Saturday now showing at the Museum of the City of New York (now through February) and with any Bank of America check card... you get in for FREE!!! The show will highlight the many personalities Beaton was able to capture through his lens during his 50 year relationship with Manhattan. To quote the exhibition's press release, "society figures, media giants, impressarios, celebrities, actors, artists, writers and merely famous passed in front of his camera in an endless parade of glamour and style."

Today, we lost a dear friend....Sunday Ibok; a great man...gone too soon.
I keep feeling like I'm going to get a text from him, saying that he's in our neighborhood tonight and wondering if we wanted to hang out.

On Sunday, I'm anticipating seeing his face as the elevator doors open up at church and I can still see him, walking around in the mornings....getting all the coffee (as he liked to label it), sugar, straws, milk.... and bagels on platters... he didn't miss a beat. Before AND after church.... Sundays' legs were covered with kids crawling all over him. He probably had a baby (or two) in his arms as well. He loved children and they loved him. Sunday just loved everyone though... plain and simple... he made an effort to make people feel cared for... He gave a damn.

I loved our talks about life....his ambitions and goals. You told me you were planning on going on more auditions soon. I was so looking forward to that.

We will miss your contagious laughter, your booming voice, your impeccable style, your incredible light and unending love for all. It always amazed me how you could seemingly be at 10 places at once....You were everyone's cheerleader and you encouraged and supported us all in our unique talents and praised them!

I promise to try and carry the light that you did so effortlessly.... I want to take the extra time to learn the stories of those around us, just as you did.... to be selfless and to care.

Go in peace brother... may you dance and sing among angels.....I know that you'll be fixing bowties as you walk down those streets.

The resurgence of Maison Michel on the fashion radar is due largely in part to the Art Direction of Laetitia Crahay; the mastermind behind enlisting the photography skills of Karl Lagerfeld for their Spring/Summer 2011 Campaign. Let's not discount the legacy and beautiful history behind this millinery house. Maison Michel was founded in Paris in 1936 by Auguste Michel; a man who took pride in high quality materials paired with equally high quality hand-craftsmanship. Maison Michel undoubtedly continues this tradition in both their 'couture' (made to order) hats as well as their pret-a-porter collections.

In 1975, the house introduced Weissmans Straw Sewing Machines which enabled invisible stitching...crucial to the aesthetic of high end and couture sensibilities. Soon after, around 1980, clients such as: YSL, Cardin, Chanel, Givenchy, Nina Ricci, LaRoche, Lanvin, LaCroix, Kenzo, Yohji Yamamoto (among others) were knocking on the doors of Maison Michel.

Chanel bought out the Maison in 1996 and since then has continued to make its mark as a staple to the industry. Wouldn't mind havin' that peach hat myself!

the New Surrealism

I've mentioned Elsa Schiaparelli before here.... and my love for all things surrealistic has not waned over the years... i have always admired the innovative and ground-breaking art of Salvador Dali, Giacommeti, Rene Magritte, Andre Breton, just to name a few. The work and collaboration by Schiaparelli among these fine artists in the 1930s, when women in the arts was something still unheard of...., is still something that can stand on its own and serves as precedence for many designers that would follow in her footsteps.

Schiaparelli was a shy woman of few words and a notoriously low self-esteem. She was confident in her skills for design, but rarely had her photograph taken and hid herself away in the corner of her Parisian studio. Amidst the seemingly shy exterior, Schiaparelli produced shocking garments, in loud colors and with extravagant detail. Sometimes, it seems that larger than life characters such as Cher, Elton John and Cher would have easily been her patrons in the 1930s. Schiaparelli's work is drastically contrasted when naming her colleagues/competitors of the time: Christian Dior, Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Paul Poiret. All these designers were undoubtedly dressing the female form in their unique ways, but it seems that Schiaparelli's work in particular strayed away from the overt feminism or conformity that was highly accepted as the standard for beauty at the time.

Schiaparelli was inspired by the quirky and the idiosyncratic and pushed the boundaries of what a garment should "do" for a woman. Some of the designers that remind me most of Schiapiarelli's legacy and philosophy are: Jean Charles de Castelbajac, Rei Kawakubo, Frankie Morello and Kansai Yamamoto.

Japanese designers have been heralded as innovators in their own right since the 1980s and Kawakubo (of Commes des Garcons) and Kansai Yamamoto were strong frontrunners in the movement that brought Japanese design and fashion to the world. This continuing movement for the surrealist in the fashion world has not been lost.... Icons and patrons such as Lady Gaga and Roisin Murphy continue to wear avant-garde fashions in the everyday and shock the world. Weekend in Cold Spring

So after weeks of planning... we finally were able to get away for a weekend upstate, along the Hudson to Cold Spring, NY. It was very much needed and it ended up being a perfect weekend; weather and otherwise. We spent the weekend exploring the town, antique shopping and enjoying the peace away from the chaos of the city. I promised to share what is going on in my life ..... so enjoy photos from our weekend away :)

FASHION FOR JAPAN

I have been so encouraged in the last week and a half by the efforts of many in the fashion community (and otherwise) who are galvanizing their money and influence to help relief efforts in Japan. With the numbers still climbing at about 20,000 (dead or missing) and 310,000 people displaced and staying in shelters..... there is undoubtedly MUCH to be done and a long road of rebuilding ahead. I have committed myself to raising as much awareness and funds as I can to contribute to these efforts and hope that you will join me as well.

I plan on purchasing Kate Spade New York Supports Japan Tote ($18) where 100% of my contributions will be donated directly to the Japanese Red Cross. This is a great way to donate and get other people to donate as well. Pre-Order available soon.

after all that has happened in the last week in japan....i can hardly muster up the motivation to write here. life here is such that we slip again and again into comfort.... and taking for granted so many of the things that have been ripped away from so many. lets just reflect on some of the things that have been happening and continue to wage on in the last several months.

I mean... the list goes on and on, one immediately feels overwhelmed and at times helpless.... You can start to see some of the things I have been struggling with and my lack of blog posts as of late. My brother just arrived SAFELY back in LA after being in Tokyo. We are so thankful he is ok and continue to pray for those in Northern Japan who have lost so much and have a long and difficult road to rebuilding ahead of them. I urge you to do the same and think of creative ways we can reach out to Japan.

The format of this blog is also going to change some what. I've realized over the last several weeks that I don't want to replicate or over saturate your reading experience or the web as a whole with things that are already being seen/said. My background is in fashion history, and while I appreciate many aspects of fashion and its industry, I want to provide something different. So expect more thoughtful, content filled posts. As these take some time to write and put together, posts will be less frequent than in recent months....I would love to hear from you all what you'd like to hear about as well. Obviously, I want to keep you updated on what is going on in my life and with LULUGRACE VINTAGE as well, so that will not stop.

1. Confetti System makes every day a party :) possible d.i.y. project :)

2. Filson Zippered Tote... this has been a total lifesaver...large pockets everywhere, key ring and sturdy canvas and leather

3. Urban Decay Dew Me Makeup Setting Spray... I cannot say enough about this product. It sets your makeup for 16 hours and not even sweat or tears can take it off! No need for primers or lugging around heavy makeup bags all day. HALLELUJAH!!

4. DIY Projects! I am experiencing another surge of creativity and wanting to make things! Anyone down for a DIY Craft Night?!

5. Chalkboard Paint!! We recently bought a can of this Benjamin Moore Chalkboard Paint and painted two walls in our dining room... it looks even better than expected and we are planning to buy another can to paint more! PHOTOS to come soon!

6. THIS COLOR Combination... I'm into bright pops of color for this spring and summer... pair these with any neutral (black, gray, white, nude) for a bold look!

Flash back to the 70s for Prada's Fall 2011 Collection. I couldn't help but make MULTIPLE references to some iconic looks from the 70s while viewing this collection. Courreges, Cardin, Yves Saint Laurent, Paco Rabanne, Balenciaga.... ICONIC designers all seemed to be referenced in Miuccia's newest collection...in her quirky, refined way, she pulled off a great homage collection. It was announced quite some time ago that the theme for this year's Costume Institute Gala and accompanying exhibition would pay tribute to the late Alexander McQueen and his extraordinary body of work. Today, The Met's director, Tom Campbell and curator: Andrew Bolton unveiled some images in anticipation of the exhibition which opens to the public on May 4th.

I was JUST having a conversation last night with some friends about how UNimpressed I have been with this season's shows.... seriously.... so boring....UNTIL! Marchesa..... I am really starting to fall in love with this brand and they are consistently surprising me, in the best of ways... Their presentation for Fall 2011 is just absolutely stunning and reminds me of the skilled craftsmanship and innovation that is coming out of Europe. Yes, I am all about supporting our domestic designers and bolstering production in our own garment district... but it seems, unfortunately that New York is, in my opinion, still a few steps behind the shows in London and Paris. By LEAPS and BOUNDS... this is my absolute FAVORITE collection of the season.

I haven't been impressed by the shows this season for New York Fashion Week....but Rebecca Minkoff's presentation was so approachable and many her fall offerings are things I can completely see myself wearing. Compared to many of the other lines who will be continuing the trend of bold, bright colorblocks and prints.... Minkoff provides neutral staple pieces that are timeless. A few of my favorites:

Pulp Fashion: Isabelle de Borchgrave

The Legion of Honor Museum in San Francisco has announced that their exhibition "Pulp Fashion: The Art of Isabelle de Borchgrave" will open February 5th and run through June 5th and will be the most comprehensive exhibition of the artist's work. Borchgrave has been working over the last 15 years; creating the most exquisite reproductions of various historical costumes; using paper as her sole form of textile. She manipulates and colors paper to create each piece, and the end result is 'tromp l'oeil' in its truest form. I'm hoping to get get out to the west coast at some point this spring/summer to see this!

In addition to her successful career as a model, she has an entrepreneurial spirit as well and opened "Reborn Process," a vintage store in New York's SOHO.

It seems the innerwear as outerwear trend revived by Dior several seasons ago is still alive and kickin. Roksanda Illincic; a talent on the rise, showed a more subtle and refined interpreation on this trend with her Pre-Fall Collection for 2011. The pale pastels intellingently juxtaposed with bold jewel tones, simple and beautiful draping, and minimal accessories shows a firm understanding of striking minimalism. All of these things makes this collection a standout for me. Illincic also shows a certain affinity for fur which I appreciate (always buy vintage or faux!). and... I need a mustard colored gown!
